This is about the Irish slave trade. In the early days of the Atlantic slave trade, the English also enslaved and sent newly conquered Irishmen to the Americas. Some even think it was the Irish slaves who laid the seeds of Christian gospel music amongst African slaves.
If you’re interested, this short piece by Micheál Ó Siochrú is great.
